Only in Dying

In dying that we are born to eternal life.

~   from Make Me A Channel of Your Peace, St. Francis Prayer

I asked my angel for a prayer for today. It didn’t come immediately but a few minutes later, when I had forgotten about my asking. I heard the strains of an old hymn from the deepest part of me. Although the hymn was very familiar, I had to lean in and listen closely in order to identify it.

As always, with anything long, I asked for the part God meant for my heart.

In immediate gentleness, the light was shone,

In dying that we are born to eternal life

Then, I saw what I had never seen before. That in every act that we choose God over the world, no matter how small that act is, we die to all that is wrong. We die to all the world sets out before us in allure.

Yet, despite the seeming smallness of that death, we make another step towards the only Life that matters, towards Light eternal.

  1. Loved your thoughts….

I asked my angel for a prayer
    And nothing did I hear
    And when I had forgotten
    An old hymn appeared

    Words that were familiar
    I leaned and listened in
For the part meant for my heart
    His light shone deep within

    These gentle words were spoken
    The answer to my strife
    In dying that we’re born
    Into eternal life

    What I hadn’t seen before
    The Spirit did unfurl
That in every act we choose
    God over this world

    That no matter how small
We die to all that’s wrong
We die to all the world
    That tempts us to belong

    Yet despite this smallness
We make a step that’s right
    To the life that matters
    Unto eternal light

  3. Such a beautiful post, and full of so much truth. I hadn’t really thought of it that way before, but you’re so right: every time we reject the ways of this world, we come one step closer to God.

    1. I wonder if it also means that with each right choice we make, the veil between this world and the next is thinned a little more. Maybe that’s why some people see and sense more of heaven than others…. people with gentle and quiet spirits, very much present in this world….yet so different.
